Writing Practice A1- Write About Your House Or Apartment

Hello! In this lesson, you’ll learn to describe where you live clearly. You’ll use simple present sentences, there is/there are, and prepositions of place. Then you’ll practise with activities and check your answers.

Goals for this lesson

  • Use the simple present to describe your home (is/has, there is/there are).
  • Name common rooms, furniture, and colours.
  • Use prepositions of place (next to, between, in front of, behind, on, under).
  • Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about your house or apartment.

Key words & sentence frames

Rooms: bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, dining room, balcony, garden, hallway

Furniture: bed, sofa, table, chair, desk, wardrobe, shelf, lamp, TV, fridge, cooker/stove, sink

Adjectives: big, small, bright, cosy/cozy, quiet, clean, modern, comfortable

Prepositions: next to, between, in front of, behind, on, under, opposite

Useful frames:

  • I live in a/an ______ (house/apartment).
  • My house/apartment is ______ (small, bright, modern).
  • It has ______ (two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room).
  • There is/There are ______ (a sofa / two chairs) in the ______ (living room).
  • My favourite/favorite room is ______ because ______.
  • The ______ is ______ the ______ (The desk is next to the window).

Tips: Use the simple present for facts about your home (It has…); use there is (singular) and there are (plural) to say what exists in a room; use prepositions to show where things are. Capitalize proper names (e.g., Atlas Residence).

Part 1 — Building sentences step by step

A clear sentence has a subject + verb + details (size, rooms, furniture, place, feeling).

  • I live in an apartment on the third floor. (home type + location)
  • It is small but comfortable. (description)
  • It has two bedrooms and a bright kitchen. (rooms)
  • There is a sofa and a big window in the living room. (furniture with there is/are)
  • The desk is next to the bed. (preposition)
  • I like my home because it is quiet. (reason/feeling)

Part 2 — Model paragraph

Example (Ali):

I live in a small apartment near the city centre. It has two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a bright kitchen. There is a comfy sofa and a TV in the living room, and there are books on the shelves. My favourite room is my bedroom because it is quiet. The desk is in front of the window, so I can study with natural light. I like my apartment because it feels cosy and clean.

Why this is good: It uses is/has, there is/there are, and prepositions (in front of) with clear reasons.

Part 3 — Guided writing

  1. Plan: Write your home type, size/colour, 3 rooms, 3 pieces of furniture, 1–2 prepositions, and 1 reason you like it.

    • It has …
    • There is/There are …
