Writing Practice A1- Describe Your Bedroom

Hello! In this lesson, you’ll learn to describe your bedroom clearly. You’ll use room/furniture vocabulary, the structures there is/there are and prepositions of place, plus a full model paragraph. Then you’ll practise with activities and check your answers.

Goals for this lesson

  • Use the simple present to describe a familiar place (your room).
  • Use there is / there are to list what’s in your room.
  • Use prepositions of place (on, under, next to, between, in front of, behind) to show where things are.
  • Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) describing your bedroom.

Key words & sentence frames

Furniture & items: bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, cupboard, bookshelf, lamp, curtains, rug, carpet, mirror, window, door, pillow, blanket

Adjectives: small, big, bright, dark, tidy, messy, cosy/cozy, quiet, colourful/colorful

Prepositions: on, under, next to, between, in front of, behind, near

Useful frames:

  • My bedroom is ______ (small but cosy / bright and tidy).
  • There is ______ / There are ______ (a desk / two windows).
  • The ______ is ______ (lamp is on the desk).
  • In my bedroom, I like to ______ (read / study / relax).
  • My favourite thing is ______ because ______.

Tips: Use the simple present for facts (My room is bright). Use there is/there are to say what exists (There is a bed, There are posters). Use prepositions to show location (on the desk, under the bed, next to the window).

Part 1 — Building sentences step by step

A clear sentence has a subject + verb + details (size, colour, location, feelings).

  • My bedroom is small but cosy. (description)
  • There is a desk next to the window. (feature + position)
  • There are two shelves above the desk. (plural feature + position)
  • The lamp is on the desk and the rug is under the bed. (prepositions)
  • I like reading on my bed in the evening. (activity + time)
  • My favourite thing is my big window because it is bright. (reason)

Part 2 — Model paragraph

Example (Sam):

My bedroom is bright and tidy. There is a big bed in the corner and a desk next to the window. The lamp is on the desk, and my books are on the bookshelf behind the door. There are blue curtains and a soft rug under the bed. I like drawing at my desk and reading before I sleep. My favourite thing is the window because the morning light makes me feel happy.

Why this works: It uses there is/there are, clear prepositions, and a reason with because.

Part 3 — Guided writing
