Imperatives in English

Imperatives are versatile and essential for everyday communication. They are used to give orders, make requests, provide directions, offer advice, warn, and even suggest ideas. In this lesson, you will learn what imperatives are, how to form them, and explore various ways to use them, with lots of examples!

1. What Are Imperatives?

Imperatives are sentences or commands that tell someone to do something. They are direct and to the point, and although the subject “you” is often implied, it is never stated.

  • Give orders: Stop immediately! 🚦
  • Make requests: Please, pass me the salt. 🍽️
  • Provide directions: Turn left at the intersection. ↩️
  • Offer advice: Drink plenty of water to stay healthy. 💧
  • Give warnings: Watch out for the dog! 🐕

Imperatives are clear and direct. They are used when the speaker wants the listener to take action right away.

Examples of Imperatives:

  • 📖 Open the book. (Order)
  • 💼 Don’t forget your documents! (Reminder)
  • 🍽️ Pass the salt, please. (Request)
  • 🌳 Let’s walk in the park. (Suggestion)
  • 💡 Turn off the lights when you leave. (Instruction)
  • 🛑 Stop talking during the presentation. (Command)
  • 🍎 Can you bring me an apple? (Request)
  • 🎨 Let’s paint the wall blue. (Suggestion)
  • 📞 Call me when you get home. (Instruction)
  • 🎒 Don’t leave your bag behind! (Reminder)
  • ✍️ Write your name on the top of the paper. (Instruction)
  • 🚶 Let’s take a walk by the river. (Suggestion)
  • 🍹 Could you pass me that drink? (Request)
  • 🚪 Close the door on your way out. (Instruction)
  • 📧 Send me the report by tomorrow morning. (Command)

2. Structure of Imperatives

Forming imperatives is very simple. There are two basic forms: the positive imperative and the negative imperative.

Positive Imperative: Use the base form of the verb.

Example: Write your name on the paper. ✍️

Negative Imperative: Add don’t before the base verb.

Example: Don’t leave your bag behind! 🎒

3. Uses of Imperatives

1. Commands 🚨

Commands are direct and express urgency or authority. They tell someone exactly what to do.

Examples:

  • 📖 Read this chapter carefully.
  • 💡 Switch on the light.
  • 🛑 Stop immediately and listen!

  • 🧹 Clean the kitchen after dinner.
  • 📲 Call your mom and check on her.
  • 🚗 Drive carefully on the slippery road.
  • 🐾 Walk the dog before it gets dark.

2. Requests 🛎️

To make a request sound polite, add “please” or use modal phrases like “could you” or “would you mind.” This softens the command.

Examples:

  • 📧 Please reply to my email promptly.
  • 📦 Pass me the package, please.
  • 🛋️ Could you sit down, please?
  • 🍽️ Please set the table for dinner.
