Writing Practice A1- Describe Your Best Friend

Hello! In this lesson, you’ll learn to describe a best friend clearly. You’ll use simple present sentences, helpful appearance & personality words, and a full model paragraph. Then you’ll practice with activities and check your answers.

Goals for this lesson

  • Use the simple present to describe a person (is/has/likes).
  • Describe appearance (hair, eyes, height) and personality (kind, funny, helpful).
  • Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about your best friend.

Key words & sentence frames

Appearance: tall, short, medium height, long/short hair, curly/straight hair, brown/black/blond hair, brown/blue/green eyes

Personality: kind, friendly, funny, helpful, clever/smart, patient, creative, shy, talkative

Hobbies: play football, draw, read books, ride a bike, play video games, dance, sing

Useful frames:

  • My best friend’s name is ______.
  • He/She is ______ years old. (age)
  • He/She is ______. (personality or height: kind / tall)
  • He/She has ______. (appearance: long hair / brown eyes)
  • He/She likes ______. (hobby)
  • We usually ______ together. (activity)

Tips: Use the simple present for facts and routines (She is kind. He likes football.). For appearance, you can use has or has got (She has / has got curly hair). Use possessive adjectives (my, his, her) to show belonging (her eyes, his bike).

Part 1 — Building sentences step by step

A clear sentence has a subject + verb + details (appearance, hobbies, feelings).

  • My best friend’s name is Omar. (name)
  • He is ten years old and very friendly. (age + personality)
  • He has short black hair and brown eyes. (appearance)
  • He likes playing football after school. (hobby)
  • We usually ride our bikes together. (activity together)
  • He makes me feel happy. (feeling)

Part 2 — Model paragraph

Example (Sara):

My best friend’s name is Lina. She is eight years old and she is very kind and funny. She has long black hair and brown eyes. Lina likes drawing pictures and dancing to music. We usually play games and ride our bikes in the park. She helps me with my homework and makes me laugh. Lina is my best friend because she is friendly and we have fun together.

Why this is good: It uses is / has / likes (simple present), includes appearance and personality, gives hobbies, and ends with a reason.

Part 3 — Guided writing
