Writing Practice A1- Write About The Weather Today

Hello! In this lesson, you’ll learn to describe today’s weather clearly. You’ll use simple weather words, two useful grammar patterns (It’s … and There is/There are …), and a full model paragraph. Then you’ll practise with activities and check your answers.

Goals for this lesson

  • Use the simple present and present continuous to talk about weather now.
  • Use It’s … (It is …) and There is/There are … to describe conditions.
  • Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about the weather today.

Key words & sentence frames

Weather words (A1): sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, snowy, foggy, stormy, hot, warm, cool, cold; nouns: sun, clouds, wind, rain, snow; extras: temperature, degrees (°C/°F), breeze

Useful frames:

  • It’s sunny / cloudy / windy / hot / cold.
  • It’s raining / snowing / foggy. (-ing for things happening now)
  • There is a light breeze / heavy rain. There are dark clouds.
  • The temperature is about 20°C. It feels warm / cool.
  • The sky is clear / grey. Today is sunny and dry.

Tips: Use the present simple for general conditions (It’s sunny) and the present continuous for weather happening right now (It’s raining). Use There is/There are to say what exists (There is a strong wind, There are clouds).

Part 1 — Building sentences step by step

Each clear sentence has a subject + verb + details (condition, temperature, feeling, plan).

  • It’s sunny and warm today. (condition)
  • The temperature is about 25°C. (temperature)
  • There is a light breeze this afternoon. (existence with there is)
  • It’s raining in the evening. (action now, -ing)
  • It feels perfect for a walk. (feeling/plan)

Part 2 — Model paragraph

Example (Amina):

Today the weather is sunny and bright. The temperature is around 23°C, and there is a light breeze. In the morning, it’s cool, but it feels warm in the afternoon. There are a few white clouds in the sky. It’s a great day to go for a short walk. This weather makes me feel happy and relaxed.

Why this is good: It uses It’s …, There is/There are …, a temperature, and a feeling.
