Writing Practice A1- Write About Your Favorite Sport

Hello! In this lesson, you’ll learn to describe your favorite sport clearly. You’ll use simple present sentences, useful sports vocabulary, and a full model paragraph. Then you’ll practice with activities and check your answers.

Goals for this lesson

  • Use the simple present to talk about what the sport is, how people play it, and what you usually do.
  • Name basic equipment, players/teams, and places for the sport.
  • Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) that explains why you like the sport.

Key words & sentence frames

Sports (examples): football/soccer, basketball, tennis, swimming, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, athletics (running)

Equipment: ball, racket, net, goal, helmet, swimsuit, goggles, boots, court, field, pitch

Actions: pass, kick, throw, hit, serve, run, swim, score, practice, train

Useful frames:

  • My favorite sport is ______.
  • It is played by ______ (two teams / two players / one person).
  • You need ______ (equipment) to play.
  • I play it at/in ______ (the park / the gym / the pool).
  • I like this sport because ______ (it’s exciting / it keeps me healthy).
  • This sport makes me feel ______ (happy / confident / relaxed).

Tips: Use the simple present for routines and facts (We play, It is). Give a reason with because (I like it because…).

Part 1 — Building sentences step by step

A clear sentence has a subject + verb + details (players, equipment, place, reason, feeling).

  • My favorite sport is basketball. (sport name)
  • It is played by two teams. (players)
  • You need a ball, a hoop, and a court. (equipment/place)
  • I play it at school with my friends. (where/with whom)
  • I like this sport because it is fast and exciting. (reason)
  • Basketball makes me feel happy and strong. (feeling)

Part 2 — Model paragraph

Example (Alex):

My favorite sport is tennis. It is played by two players or by two teams of two. You need a racket, a ball, and a net on a tennis court. I usually play at the sports center on Saturday morning. I like tennis because it is fast and it helps me stay healthy. This sport makes me feel focused and confident.

Why this is good: It uses is/are, explains players, equipment, and place, and gives a clear reason with because.
