Goals for this lesson
- Use simple present tense to describe daily actions (eat, study, relax, sleep).
- Use time expressions (at 7:00 p.m., after dinner, before bed).
- Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about your evening routine.
Key vocabulary & time expressions
Actions: have dinner, wash the dishes, do homework, study, take a shower, watch TV, read, relax, brush my teeth, go to bed, fall asleep
Time words: at 6:30 p.m., after dinner, before bed, then, next, usually, sometimes
Tip: Use the simple present for routines: I have, I do, I go.
Part 1 — Building sentences step by step
A clear sentence usually has a subject + verb + details (time, place, reason).
- I have dinner at 7:00 p.m. (subject + verb + time)
- I do my homework after dinner. (subject + verb + time phrase)
- I relax with my family in the living room. (subject + verb + place)
- I go to bed at 10:00 p.m. because I wake up early. (adds a reason)
Part 2 — Model paragraph
Example (Layla):
My name is Layla, and my evenings are simple. I have dinner with my family at 7:00 p.m., and we talk about our day. After dinner, I wash the dishes and then do my homework at about 8:15. Sometimes I watch a short TV show, but I usually read for twenty minutes. Before bed, I take a shower and brush my teeth. I go to bed at 10:00 p.m., and I feel ready for the next day.
Why this is good: It uses time words (at 7:00 p.m., after dinner, before bed), connects ideas (and, after, then, but, before), and stays in the simple present.
Part 3 — Guided writing
- Plan: Write three times you do things (e.g., dinner, homework, bed).
- Draft: Use these starters:
- I have dinner at …
- After dinner, I …
- Then I …
- Before bed, I …
- I go to bed at …
- Check: Use the checklist below.
Self-check (A1 writing checklist)
- Did I use the simple present (have, do, go)?
- Did I include time words (at 7:00, after, before, then)?
- Do my sentences start with a capital letter and end with a period?
- Do I have at least 5 sentences?

Part 5 — Your paragraph
Write 5–7 sentences about your evening routine. Use time words and the simple present.
Sample answer: I usually have dinner at 6:45 p.m. After dinner, I help my mother wash the dishes. Then I do my homework at the table. Sometimes I watch a short video, but I turn off the TV at 9:00. Before bed, I take a shower and read a book. I go to bed at 9:45 p.m.
Review & reflection
- Which time words did you use? (at, after, before, then, usually)
- What is one small change that could make your evening better?
- Can you add one more detail (place, reason, or feeling) to your paragraph?
